Pinning Life Down

An unending journey of growth it is, they say.
From kindergarten to crutches, years swept away.
Alphabets become scoldings.
Don't put your hand near the candle-flame, they say.

When this journey becomes a perpetual run away from life itself,
Because you're trying to fit in all the while,
Trying to be a good son, a good student, father, worker.
Does that suffice for you?

You create your own destiny, they say.
Is that big house you built the manifestation of that?
Have goals, rules, benchmarks taken over feelings and Life itself?
Is this evolution a devolution in disguise?

The realm of the quotidian is a trap.
You'll start living the day you'll remember
There was nothing to break free from or to abide by
Rubbing your eyes as you welcome the sunlight and love
Into your life blinding, yet
Brimming with the essence of Life.

The Burden of Hope

The promise of Fate lands in your sight.
You exult, with eyes shut tight,
Arms stretched out to the sky.
Trying to grasp the future in this present moment

The veil of time binds, yet separates
The present and the anticipated future event
That you ardently await.
And you thought Knowledge always gave you strength?

In the midst of planning your life all over again,              [Some think they can.]
When memories strike, nightmares jolt you;
Where do you exist?
In the past, present, Or the cusp of perpetual pain?

We're Friends Again. =)

Well, I didn't decide to write about this here thinking 'Oh this will be a terrific blog post, so let's do it!' This is about what I was like, what I did, a couple of years back in school.

I excelled at academics till I was in class IV or so, till which I had observed that many of the friends I had, were there because I was one of the toppers. Some would draw cards for me on my birthday. As my grades started to drop from class IV on, I lost those 'friends' of mine. I lost confidence too, and then the friends I made in V, VI, VII weren't exactly 'friendly' either, I was generally made fun of, one day a friend who was my partner too in class, said to me that she would ask our class teacher, Ma'am Patsy to find her a new class partner, because her mother had said to her that 'If you mingle with students who're poor at studies, you'll become like them.' I was aghast, however I took that with a pinch of salt. This was in class V.

I found a great friend in Insha, in class VII, on most days both of us would scuttle off to some new spot in the school and discuss teachers and laugh about ten things. She didn't make it to class VIII, whereas mine was a case of conditional promotion. When the session commenced after the results, I don't know what came over me, I started avoiding Insha during recess every day, sticking instead to the 'group' that I had. I wasn't too happy about this bunch of buddies I had either, since I knew I couldn't trust them, that they secretly mocked at me, but having a group to boast of gave me some ridiculous assurance at that point of time. She didn't say anything, we never talked after that. But, I never had the guts to look into her eyes after that first day I moved past her during recess.

I always planned to write her an apology letter, till we were in school. Even at those times, I'd not have enough courage to own up and admit that I had purposely ignored her years back. I'd keep thinking I'll write something like, 'Another friend spread some rumours about you and I ended up believing her, you know!' Out of nowhere, yesterday, while recollecting my days at school, thinking about how I didn't really have much of a personality till I was in class XI, considering my focus was on making friends [didn't think so much about good and not genuine friends then, didn't really have a choice.], I ended up remembering Insha again. About how she was this one friend I could confide in always. One friend I could bank on. And I'd let her down. That she said not a word made me feel doubly ashamed. I realised I couldn't undo that one thing anyway, and the least I could do was to write her an apology, this time stating the truth, why I did it. Funny how I always wanted a good friend, in school, and when I had one, I didn't respect our friendship, I lost her. Today, I sent her an apology, and I feel lighter.

Today, I am glad I am no longer a shadow who'll cower under another's presence, and be moulded by his influence. I make friends, I respect them, make sure Others do, I don't think twice before glaring at someone who's too keen on giving my friend a hard time. This is a confession to myself because I finally decided to tell her the truth, to accept it myself too- what led me to avoid her way back in school. The difference between then and now is, that in school, I had very few genuine friends [before Std XI], though I wanted one badly; today I have many, genuine, frank, concerned friends, and I am grateful that they are a part of my life. Whether it's a pen friend I talk to occasionally, or the girl who's on my speed dial list, my friends are for eternity, a lifetime is too short a span to spend with such wonderful persons. I'll end by saying, if at all you've let a friend down at some point, make it up to them TODAY, it's Never 'too late' to win a friend back, or atleast let them know what you meant/mean to them. Who knows, somewhere in their heart, they might let out a profound sigh, and a nostalgic smile. =)

30th August:

P.S. I am friends with Insha again! Thank God and thank you for reading. :D

Take Note, There's Happiness Gliding By!

Out for a stroll in the evening, met with
An innocuous smile flowing from
The eyes of a face across the street.
I smile back, happy, without bothering about
The who, how and why of it.
It made my day.

Groggy and sulking, dragged myself out of home

Early morning, the other day.
Overheard a conversation, it made me laugh.
Driving around, running months old rotten errands.
Counting minutes stuck at the red light,
Now fervently hoping flying cars will be invented someday soon.
Muttering away, I go on a honking spree.
When a quick wave of tiny hands,
Coupled with a chuckle and smile
Greets me through a car window
As I happen to look to my right.
Left smiling sheepishly at him,
I waved back like an excited kid.
While the cars behind honked away.

Irked by the nonchalance of the shopkeeper,

As I made my way out of her shop,
Ticked another errand off the list;
With a frown on my face.
The heavy bags on either side,
The weather at its worst.
Paved the way to set
My mood to 'annoyed', next.
As I took the turn for my house,
Noticed a wagging tail by my side.
I stopped, so did he. I gestured at it, half bent.
He cocked his head to one side, ears upright, and
Tail wagging still, while I laughed.
Finally kept my bags on the pavement, caressed it,
While it looked ahead, then at me, keenly.
Eventually I walked on, it hopped across the road.
Delving into the land of nod that night
As I recollected those happy sights,
Let out a prayer for each of them.
Chose to remember these wondrous delights, hard to find.

Of Telegrams and Letters.

The other day, I stepped out of the house in the morning, I had to mail a letter to a friend who'd recently moved to a different city. I was doing this after ages. I remember posting letters, post-cards and inland letters alike, regularly to my grandparents in Calcutta, but this was till some seven-eight years back. After that, this routine of writing long letters was replaced by convenient telephonic conversations.

With all the recent flutter created regarding the 160-year old Telegraph service coming to a halt for good, and this recent incident, which I'm yet to complete narrating, one can draw a connection. So as I obliviously took turns and crossed roads to reach the Post Office after God knows how many years, I was met with a sudden doubt in my head- was the Post Office still located where it was when I'd seen it last? The question is, when had I seen it last? I sure couldn't remember. What sounded like a ridiculous thought at first started gaining more credibility in my mind as I took further steps in that very lane, unable to spot the Post Office yet. At first I thought to myself, 'How could I not know when the P.O. had shifted location?', followed by a wave of despondence, thinking I'd woken myself early that morning for nothing. Just when I was thinking all of this, sure enough the Post Office came in sight. Instead of being a little relieved because now I had a Post Box to put the letter into, I felt my steps slowing, wondering what thoughts clouded my sight over the countless times I'd crossed that lane, all these years, on my way to another place, or to visit a shop in the same lane.

But that wasn't all. I confusedly asked this person seated on a shabby chair behind the counter if I could get an envelope for a letter I had to post, he directed me to another counter. I asked him for an envelope then, and then I asked for a stamp, I mentioned it twice, yet he handed out change from the envelope purchase and went back to his desk-work, while I wondered why he wouldn't respond. I peered at the envelope, and registered the detail that the envelope had a printed stamp at the corner, so one wouldn't have to purchase and paste stamps as earlier. Except that this was one part of the letter-sending adventure I was looking forward to today, gluing the stamp on to the envelope. I wrote the address, glued the flap shut, and almost reluctantly started to shove the letter into the post box, when I withdrew my hand, thinking I would definitely want to click a picture of the envelope. The thought surrounding my head was- 'Who knows when I'll post a letter again. Sigh' So there I was, tracing my steps back home finally. Then I thought of the now stalled telegraph services, and how people had queued up on the last day at the counter, as late as 10: 30 in the night, and felt like I'd just experienced something similar. I had thought too, of sending across a telegram to someone, so I could boast of having sent it ten, twenty, thirty years later. I didn't. And it only felt better when my friend mentioned how he didn't send one in the last few days either just so he'd know what it feels like to send a telegram or he could mention the same to someone. Knowing that you probably didn't have the word 'telegram' mentioned in any of your numerous conversations with numerous people, say, in the past five years. That does sound odd now, doesn't it, flocking to their office on the last day, sending their revenues to a skyrocketing high on a day the officials working there know is to be the last at 'work'.

I'd been oblivious to the existence of the Post Office all these years maybe, whenever I'd pass by it, the years I didn't send letters. I had the option of sending in an email to that friend, knowing I had that letter saved in a word doc on my system, I chose to send in a letter though, and somewhere it makes me a little happy. I may not have made a beeline to the telegram office on the last day to send one, and we all know we tend to hold in sight or memories only what is important to us, but the question is, what are you trying to prove by rushing to send a telegram to a loved one today, you're trying to commemorate something that won't exist anymore, and why, because till date it didn't really matter to you, except the 5 marks the question 'Write a telegram to XYZ conveying so and so' would fetch you in your English examination in school?

The Vantage Point

Drenched in the new-found joy
Lurking, like a water-drop to a bird.
(Her) Taking tipsy-turvy strides,
Nursing affections, hiding coy smiles
Under laughter and a grin at times.
Because all that stays, when glances kiss;
Pursed lips and clenched fists
Conveying the love brimming forth.

A terse turn, then a collage of colours

Swerves towards and merges before her eyes.
Resumed walking, halted in thoughts.
Memories and visions clash, collude
To spill out the venom from her heart.

Bruised, damaged, till she got home.

Swinging between dilemma and guilt
Like a rag-doll flagellating itself.
To go sleeping on nightmares or
Wake up to happy thoughts?
Only truth will decide. Or should she.

She heard it all. Wished to know more.

That she couldn't, she knew, too.
A quote stared at her from the wall.
'What you believe is what you see.'
She let out a weak chortle.
Led back into those blinding hues.

The Street Lamp

I see cars whiz past.
Children, men, old persons walk by.

I stand by through steely winter dawns,

Bustling summer sunsets
Autumn nights and chirpy spring noons.

While a chink of light

Sneaks out through the curtains
From that building across the street, furtively
As if reaching out to me.

I bow down before the sun in the day.

But what good is a tree in winters?
While the moon and I sway in a duet
And during a downpour, I meet myself
In a puddle down there.

Looking Forward to the Past

Death lies not in the culmination. It exists in
The approaching absence and the reminiscence.
A looming presence that lives
When you're born; lives on once you shut your eyes to eternal sleep.

They say, death can be Beautiful.

But do you Ever look forward to it,
As you reach higher up the ladder of corporeal success,
As you lean further towards that walking stick for a reprieve?

Is is for the end we all prepare?

(Why) Do we look for a gain even in our moment of death?
So much for that moment which in itself
Is transient and eternal at the same time.

Is it strange we sit back in eager anticipation of

Things uncertain always, in oblivion to the one fact of our lives?
Is death a cruel thing [in itself]?
What makes someone embrace it, then?
For all we know, we experience a death before we enter this realm, this world.
Maybe, we squirm at our slated arrival here.

What do we know of the end, or what the end is in the first place?

Let's not term death invincible and a monster already.
Why then do euthanasia and death sentences exist?

Etchings of Chaos

Over cupfuls and clinking of glasses,
High fives and conversational glances,
Buds a relation, of acquaintances.
People get to know people.

Some you couldn't get bored of,

Others, you wouldn't care to entertain.
While a few, make no difference to you.
You know them all, they do too.

Or so you think.

When it's no longer gossip that's doing the talking.

Friendships turn sour over
Things you wouldn't even want to start comprehending.
When Desdemona slips into Othello's lines effortlessly.

Exchange lives and you'll know.

Sexuality's a spectrum,
Not a grey black or an off-white.
So is 'morality' and every other.

Don't talk about peace or violence.

Merge harmony and chaos and stand still, to see.
'Your life' and 'my life' are hollow constructs.
Then you start to fall, you're back on your feet,
Trying to see the silence.

Thinking, funny you didn't hold onto yourself

Because you could have.
Or so you think.

A Threshold or an Impasse.

When you're midway through,
And there's a tug of war going on
Between the future and the past.
The latter attempting to lull you into mundane melancholy.
While the future makes you wonder,
If it is meant to be looked forward to,
Or to be shirked away from?

Day dreaming about the joys you look forward to,
To waking up at night with vestiges of ancient miseries.
Like living two lives concomitantly.
Seeing the present mould itself every instant
In front of your eyes.
As your mind acknowledges the burden of history
Wading in and out of consciousness.

Is Becoming a Rock Fan What We All Are Aiming For?

Started with rhymes and lullabies, then tunes I hummed to, Backstreet Boys and MJ, way back in the 90's, while my elder cousins would mouth the lyrics of those english songs with panache, and I'd stare at them in wonder, thinking to myself;  how cool it would be if I could sing along and dance to the songs without a single mistake. With TV to watch, I knew all hindi songs by rote. By the time I was thirteen, I was introduced to english tracks, most of them being friends' suggestions. Not to forget that I was already a fan of Britney Spears and Bryan Adams since I was twelve, maybe. It was in XI that I came to know about the Billboards, despite it being such an old thing.

I actually started listening to more english tracks around when I was fifteen, most of them by pop artistes, again. Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Bryan Adams were names I always looked up, when discussing/exchanging music. And of course, I would make sure I was the first one to tell buddies in school about some new hindi song that hit the radio. After a while, around the time when I entered college, I gradually steered away from hindi music altogether, because I'd started finding all these songs so irritating, with lyrics so cheesy, redundant tunes, and some shitty rap or background stuffed into almost each new song that came up. So I'd listen to more of pop and rock, and felt quite glad, that I'd moved on to some good music. What follows next is a list of entirely new bands/artistes that I start hearing about, and when I'd say, that I hadn't even heard of the bands before, forget having heard a track or two by them, I would get gaping mouths and stares that lasted at least a minute. To top it all, I couldn't bring myself to liking those bands, barring a rare few. after listening to them, that is. I had heard of 'The Beatles', 'U2', 'ACDC' all along, but never listened to them. And now, I don't really find their music that great. Of course, I have come to love Coldplay- not only are the lyrics understandable [in terms of accent], and make sense. Chris Martin's voice is beyond soothing and their music speaks for itself. However, I cannot bring myself to loving Bob Marley or Bob Dylan precisely Because they are so freaking popular, and every third friend I know seems to be humming their tunes every other day. And, I am in love with the hindi songs I'd run away from like two years back, and I have as many of those in my list as the number of english tracks I'd collected over the past two years. So, when someone tells me, that you take a lot of time to be able to appreciate music by, say, Porcupine Tree; or a Bob Dylan, I don't really care, because just like ice cream flavours, we all got different tastes in music, and hence no genre, artiste, band can be termed the best, because the won the Grammy or they did not. It's a long procedure that starts from forming a band, making your way through a zillion other bands who make music belonging to the same genre, and then seeing where you stand, say five years later. But not every musician on the planet goes on to give a public performance in front of a 30,000 strong jeering crowd, and become a facebook/youtube hit overnight. Just like, because Beyonce stands being the Most Beautiful woman in the world for this year according to People's magazine, one cannot say she/he has seen every woman's face on earth and hence Beyonce is undoubtedly the prettiest. Moreover, why should the faces change over the years!

Besides which, I cannot understand how one can like music belonging to only some particular genre and hate the rest. That is just impossible. I appreciate music of all kinds, a simple tune that catches my attention could become my favourite song for the next few weeks or months, or years. And of course, I am not trying to say that pop is the best genre because I listen to it a lot or rock is the best genre we could ever have. So when people talk like listening to Bob Marley or The Beatles is like a kind of musical nirvana, which you can attain by giving up other forms of music, and listening to only and only them, I might as well want to play a pop song or a hindi track just to bug them! :P

Cheers to music, lyrics matter, but if there's great music, it can bring forth a gush of tears, or set your feet tapping, or simply make you sit back and smile. Why wouldn't all artistes sit back and write poems then, if  they found music so trifle unimportant?

Holding On To Nothing.

Scribbled lines and swirls on a sheet of paper.
Got tired of the dearth of ideas in mind, so
I crumpled it up, aimed it at/into the bin standing across the room
Hoping it would fall right in. It did, I nearly exulted.

A day full of frolic and gaiety,
brought me into confronting a big trouble
Right when I was delving into slumber,
A sudden intrusion of thoughts stirring up a whirlwind of emotions.

Could I somehow know when to lose hope, and when to wake up
and and not go back to sleep again?
Could I find out, before I ventured into something that caught my eye,
Whether it would repay me with further delights?
For to what purpose then, should I give my all to something,
That was never to give me joy that made me smile like a cradled child.

Then I was smiling again, though there were no reasons left,
and then came another blow, reminding me that I had no reason to smile.
I was despondent, angry.
When comes news I awaited, and forgot I'd even cried that day.
Awoke the next day, prayed and left from home looking for familiar faces and places.
Maybe even that would help.

Fallen to the Ground.

Thumps on the earth.
Vapours dance their way up.
Twigs sway and give in to the cold bliss.
Fallen leaves circle their way round.

Puddles welling up.
Wish the ripples would just stay.

Worms wriggle their way out.
Drenched feathers under shadows attempting flight.
A nest fallen to the ground.
The little ones gaze on, confused.
Wet grass. Murky waters and mud fights.

A sapling that toppled over, drowned in careless joys.
A shoot that gushed out, kissed water.

Drains overflowing. It's monsoons again.
Blurred windows at the red light.
Frantic run to the roof to pick clothes from the wire.
So glad it finally drizzled, says she,
Sitting behind that glass wall.
Beautiful sight. Dozed off in the air-conditioned room.

Lovers' Labyrinth

Maybe they've seen a better place,
Been through a better phase.
One that lasted forever.
Not because it was brimming with delights and smells.
Because they never tried to win, something that was never a race.

Umpteen disappointments, and another truckload later.
What was seen, was peaceful togetherness.
Because there, what actually and only mattered for once, was love, and nothing else.

For he had been through it all.
He knew of roses, eyes and kisses.
And also knew, these weren't what she saw in her own eyes.
When she walked on the grass,
She longed for a heartfelt smile on his face,
A glance of that, and away she would go.

A tear in her eye, and he wouldn't say a word.
She wanted it just like that.
When they realised they couldn't be themselves in the midst
Of a multitude of clashed perspectives.
Each went home, knowing what was, is, and will be. Content.

They knew they had to part ways.
But they knew, their hearts were bound for eternity.
So what at first appeared a haze,
Seemed now to be the best they could have ever received.
As they walked in opposite directions, they only felt closer than ever.

If Looks Could KILL

No denying that I would definitely think myself luckier if the guy I fell for, was a dashing hunk. Or even cute for that matter. Basically, if he had a 'flaunt-worthy' face, I would be even happier that I got mentally hooked on to a guy who is good-looking. Not that looks have ever been an important criteria for me. Maybe because, there used to be a time when I would go berserk the moment I spotted someone turning the camera in my direction, or the fact that I couldn't bring myself to staring at myself in the mirror for longer than two minutes, happens with many of us while we're adolescents. Maybe because I know what it's like, to have felt acutely diffident about my looks, one time. And that even now, each time I get raving compliments from someone, I do not automatically elevate my 'a guy's looks standard' in mind. I do not start saying to myself like a fool, laughing the laughter of a donkey, that 'Oh, now on I will show interest only to guys who're this much hot and physically appealing. So many compliments did not make their way to me for nothing. It would be most embarrassing to be spotted with a guy who's just decently hot.' With some girls, that's something they religiously do. A spate of compliments come their way, and they'll be acting like they're the only female left of the species, on the planet. And some guys, would add to that, by actually paying attention to such sick behaviour. Pitiable.

Then there are people who'd congratulate you heartily when you animatedly tell them about your new boyfriend, only to add that caustic statement in the end- 'But I think you deserve better. You're so hot. She/He could have found better suited to his/her standards in the looks department.' All you manage to say is 'Oh, I rather find him cute!' or a 'He loves me like crazy!' and paste an almost apologetic smile on your face. When what you really feel like saying, could be,
'Oh he's not good enough for me? Aww. . He's not your boyfriend, now, Is He? If you don't wanna see his face or something, put on your shades when he comes.'

Then again, if there's a hot chick + nerd couple spotted somewhere, people around won't take a minute to start thinking of reasons of 'what led her to do that?', while the couple is having a great time laughing and canoodling, not giving two hoots about people around. People around behave like it's a chemical equation gone wrong. Almost like they spotted a gay couple making out or something. Tearfully, someone would say- 'Good heavens, is she blind?'

Many of us demand we have the right to date only hot guys/girls. By that logic, you ought to as much physically appealing, too. Now what about the ones who're not good-looking themselves? What if the prettiest of girls turned ugly for an instant, or what if, you saw your crush in an oily hair-humongous specs on-ill fitting jeans and shirt avatar? I wonder where all the love would go. That instant, you'd be earnestly wishing, since love ain't blind, you were blind.
Would be nice to go for Dark & Ugly creams and lotions, if ever available, someday; rather than the Fair &; Lovely crap. Just to see how people's smiles shortened and gestures turned cold with time. Or how many proposals you got while you went lower on the Hotness Quotient each day. But then again, none of us would actually do that. We all know why.
Better to fall for people than faces, I say. For those who insist they'll only stop at finding a hot guy/girl to go out with, but haven't found much luck so far, might as well go find a life-size barbie and some dildos.

My favourite hot girl and geek guy couple, Max and Naomi, from the show 90210. :) :D

How To Fall In Love

[Perverted interpretations are encouraged, at the right places]

Seriously, I have no clue about this one. And will probably never figure this one out. Far from being perpetually love-induced unlike some close friends [not that I abhor it], the only reason why this is my second blog post on this topic is because, well, I was out of topics to write on, my friend suggested a few things, and this one seemed toughest, and that was reason enough!
So, yeah, don’t expect me to write anymore than what the title literally entails. I wouldn’t be surprised if by the end of reading this you ended up laughing your insides out, instead of the anticipated gush of ‘I Knew I Am in Love!’ For both of those who’re not into the ‘love is all around’ syndrome and the ones who believe that ‘Love is very much all around’; well, you should take a read. Let’s cross out all our experiences, good or bad and just think that we’re living this one, as long as we read. What must be kept in mind, is that I’m writing purely out of imagination.  So, you’re a new sophomore. You find some, no; quite a few eye candies around. It’s nice to think of going out on a date with Each of them, one by one, each day. Even nicer to think that you’re asked out by them, in order of your favourites. Life seems blissful already. Months go by, there’s plenty eye contact during classes, and more after classes, if you know what I mean. Someday that all-time-favourite chick is looking all shrivelled up, and not that hot, and you don’t want to say no. And then you flash a bright, wide smile at the girl next to you, hold her hand tight and skid off. The next day she’s back to looking all sizzling and propped up, literally, so are you, [naturally] and you both behave as if nothing ever really happened, and head out after classes.
Couple more weeks down the line you get bored, actually. You zero in on someone, so does she, over a couple of meetings and things seem great, this being your first stint at ‘relationships’. You’re pretty happy with the smooth sailing, you never have to bother about that front. Things get lovey-dovey and you guys actually start doing little things for each other, missing each other. One fine day, she ends it. States reasons, keeps it short and sweet. You accept it all, because you know you were being rather selfish. She finds someone else soon enough, you don’t try and act like the jealous ex and run after her like a love-sick puppy. You yourself were eyeing other girls, it was time to move on, after all. That’s what she said to you, come on. A fortnight later, you are with a hotter, no not sweeter chick. You find yourself falling for her sooner than you’d ever think you would. And, she ditches you, after cheating on you a month later. You invite all your guy friends over for a sleepover, get sloshed. While you’re sitting on the corner of the bed, after you return from the washroom having puked all you want; you end up staring at your friend, and realise you’re smiling at him. He stands up, equally sloshed, takes your hand and you both go into the other room. Things happen, you both end up feeling great- ecstatic, happily exhausted- after weeks, months. You realise you’ve had your dose of girls, for the year. Then, you keep in touch and things seem to be going great for both till you both are on the verge of getting caught. You admit you’re no hero, and you cut off contact altogether. Things seem all blurred and vague to you. You finally have time on your hands to think over what happened over the past few months, and you don’t seem to have a clue. The inability to be able to come up with a logical sequence of events irks you no end. You’re scared, so you start off with your random dates and night outs again, with the hottest of chicks in the campus. And each morning after, you thank your stars you’re not entirely ‘gay’.

While you’re all focused on your academics and close to excelling at it, you still can’t get over the emotional whirlwind that went by the previous year. And what comes as a pleasant surprise is noticing you’re being eyed by a demure dame, someone whose presence you were not even aware of all these months. Neither was she. You are secretly infatuated with her, you like to check her out then and now. You go ahead to ask her out, and you discover you’ve been the butt of her jokes lately. You’re miffed, but not enough to stop liking her altogether. A few days pass by, and you see her taking even more interest in you. She flirts, and smirks, leaves. You end up realising she’s not all that coy, as you liked. Just as she would almost hate you on knowing you were a little into that close ‘bro’ of yours. You’re happy enough to see her play around, drop euphemisms, and you end up feeling more shy in front of her each day. Things grow intense with each passing day, neither says a word though. Come Monday, and you’ll ‘do something about it’. She doesn’t turn up. You’re restless by the end of the day. Angry. Tuesday’s here, and you’re on your toes. Classes over, you call her, she turns back, comes walking in confident strides. You’d imagined an entire conversation, guessed her responses, but realised things went a little off-track here. She looks into your eyes, with the ‘Tell me what’s been going on’ look, and smiles sweetly the very next instant. You’re confused, more than ever. Shyer, too. After five more minutes of no talk, only awkward smiles later, you just say ‘nothing’ and you both walk on. She’s close to sprinting, you realise. Grabbing her hand, you pull her into the classroom, kick the door, and you both embrace and kiss, walk out ten minutes later, laughing. Months later, you're still together.

Quite adventurous a ride this would be, if someone were to experience this for real. Many have. How many of you have been able to read up till here, is something I’d want to know, if I could. Some could term it explicit, weird- whatever term suits their fancy. Having written this as I thought, this is how ‘love’ should be seen, by people alike. You might as well end up liking it. Drop the notions, rigid conventions, go for those impulsive likings, to try and know what love is, for a change. The ‘How’ part will fall in place on its own.

What Makes You Happy.

As I type out words for my next post, things are changing. Everywhere. Not all of the transitions are conspicuous, though, like some changes catch us off guard, and are often the drastic ones, and we're again left questioning ourselves about 'free will'. Some trivial things when no longer a part of our lives, of our routine, do indeed make the greatest of impact on us.

Being a Delhite, I'm one of those who's always up for street food. They're not snacks to me, I can have an entire meal of chaat, paani-puri, and tikki, let out a happy burp, too. :P At the street vendor's, I love popping the entire golgappa into my tiny mouth, and enjoy it. Earlier, I'd cringe at the thought of doing that, and eat them in halves. It didn't look nice, you know. Bleh. As if that did not spoil the fun, anyway. Now, I ask for the khatta paani, a dry paapdi, without giving two hoots at how the teary-eyed people gulping down their golgappas stared at me. When I go to Haldiram's, at a mall or somewhere, the very thought of having golgappas and that instant excitement, don't make their way on time in my mind. All I feel is, okay, yeah. I can have paani-puri all right. The sight of the gloved hands placing the paani puri and stuff takes away my appetite. I enjoy the food, for the thrill. When you're unwell, with an upset stomach or a sore throat, Nothing is more thrilling than having that plate of your favourite street food, against your mother's incessant warnings regarding the same. Who Cares If You Fell Even More Ill? It's the memory of having eaten to your heart's content despite that, that you would laugh over, for a long time to come. Seriously, the over-emphasis on hygiene makes one lose appetite, instead of being more convinced.

For kids' birthdays, themed parties are the in thing. Gifts are exchanged, cakes are ordered, and so on. Do kids really even enjoy, or understand what's going on at these parties? Do they even know what's being celebrated? When you have cupcakes being distributed, cupcakes of which the major upper half is merely non-edible decoration, and the small piece is the cake which would be gone in two bites. Gone are those days when birthdays were celebrated at home, with home-made delicacies disappearing in minutes, with presents being given that needed not be grand and expensive-looking. Take your child to one of those themed birthday parties at a mall or somewhere, and your kid is sure to come back home asking for something like that on his next birthday. Why not? They all want something the other has, we've all experienced it as kids. But then, it's not the birthday being celebrated, it's more of an ostentation, where many kids end up feeling worse because their parents cannot afford to throw grand, lavish parties like those, the birthday kid is clicked each time he receives a gift, or gives a return gift, and is shown around to one and all, dresses in his/her best clothes.

To be able to say you've truly enjoyed the day, when you're about to doze off, would be when you'd start laughing or smiling again when bits of memories of what you did come back to your mind at random, and you almost forget about your sleep. And you don't even realise when you've spent another few minutes thinking of how great the day went, what all you did. Spending year after year, working wherever you do, to be best able to provide your loved ones with the best, is something is everyone seems to be working on. And that's a great thing to do, undeniably. But sometimes, people nearly forget that after attaining a comfortable position in life, because of the numerous contacts, friends, acquaintances they've built over the years, because more people know you and you know them, means more than just that; and is not just something to be only glad about. It's nice to let people know you're having fun, but only when you really are. It's not the bragging that counts, because people will animatedly, curiously ask to know more. If you start seeking permission to have fun, you will never be able to. Because there's rarely someone we find now, who says and does things, unabashedly. When we give up doing things we truly love, we do not remain ourselves. Unless we find as great and enjoyable things, which is hard to come by. And then, a contrast builds up. One that would be utterly lurid, when placed in juxtaposition. It would be so not because you had brought about that change, but you let it happen. Change is not always for the better, that way.

Talking Trash.

For those who can write away pages after pages on something they were asked to, or on something they have strong views on, but fall short of uttering more than a string of disconnected words, when in front of a bunch of people- Maybe, because you've forever been like that, not being able to/wanting to speak out what your views are on a certain topic being discussed. Maybe you've struggled, each time, visualised yourself speaking away to glory, and even receiving a raving applause from the very handful people around who were so used to not seeing you speak, so used to not having noticed you. But you realised it doesn't come that easy. Times are, when you stop yourself from saying something that came to your mind, because you feared it'll sound lame, and a minute later, your friend says the same thing, and you get guffaws of laughter from all around, and you're plain angry at her/him for having stolen your 15 seconds of fame. :P
Then you see people around you, talking nineteen to the dozen. Colleagues, neighbours, friends. Family? Does the same happen when you're home, too? Here, I am not trying to assert that you're smart only if you can chatter away at the drop of a hat, anywhere, anytime. Having the gift of the gab is a great deal valuable indeed. Then, after sulking over your mouth-taped condition in public, when you eventually go back to just listening to what people have to say, how different people respond. And, you realise that many of them, or maybe some of them, are talking away trash, saying stuff for the sake of it, just to keep the conversation going. So, there are many, who're as clueless as to where the conversation's headed, but make sure to speak in then and now, so their presence is noted. Also, there is no such thing as you having to be correct all the time, in all that you say. Whereas, many such people, take gulps each time they utter their 'opinions'. What I am trying to convey, here, is aptly summed up by what my friend had to say, a few months back.

"The question is not whether you're a jerk or not. Of course, you are. Everybody's a jerk, to some extent. The real question is just how concentrated you are. Even big jerks are easy to deal with if they're dilute enough."

So ultimately, what seems to be catching everyone's fancy, is the presentation, the portrayal, rather than the content. If you're a soft-spoken soul taking a shot at debating, chances are you'll end up feeling nauseated and yet again be so taken in by what the opponent has to say that you're in a fix again when you realise that you're expected to say something, to defend your stance, next. The very same evening, though, you may be talking non-stop with your bunch of close buddies. In front of new faces, you just can't come up with a new question to ask, or something to say, to what's already being discussed. Starts right from childhood, when there's peals of laughter and delight if a toddler recites an entire poem correctly, accompanied with claps that mark 'appreciation'. I remember the same being asked of me when my parents scuttled from school to school for my admission to school. Ashamed and scared back then that I couldn't splutter out a handful of words when asked simple questions, that my parents had prepared me to answer with quite some style and panache, I am quite happy with how I have fared till now, in that respect. At the same time, when I now talk to people whom I knew for years, but never exchanged a word with before, I am astounded each time someone says I seemed an arrogant/mean/proud person to them. Because those who know me would probably not count me as mean or arrogant, hopefully. :D And then I'm back to wishing I were one of those who could just start off a conversation and be the one who did most of the talking even in front of  unfamiliar faces. Though am glad such yearnings don't last long. For now, am happy enough that I talk more than I ever did, years back. And it feels better. But Nothing feels better than coming back to this space, and writing away something, hoping each time, that it'll strike a chord with all of you reading it, and you'll laugh at a thing or two. Enough to make me happy for now, I guess? :)

Ants and Us [incomplete]

Sitting outside, I noticed a colony of ants walking by a path. Fascinating, how these tiny creatures spend their lives [however short it may be] coordinating with a whole bunch of ants, surviving, and dying one day. They're oblivious to our existence, of course. [Can we presume that?] Laugh all you want but all of us can't prove otherwise, either. My point being, we're mere ants in a gigantic universe, where we can only shudder and stop when something unnatural happens, and then go back to to our mundane lives. I wonder if only a handful of us are curious? Or is everyone plain dumb, and watching movies like Koi Mil Gaya and Krishh suffice for and 'entertain' you enough, and quieten your curiosity?

Man has forever been curious, at the same time, that curiosity has been limited to within himself only, not outside. Risk-taking is one admirable trait in mankind, yet the risks he's taken all along are for the immediate better, usually. And so, today, he can't proudly claim, that all he has in front of him is all perfection, or working towards it. Thinking we're working towards something, it is only too late that we realise that something else is already crumbling down. A very myopic view of things then, probably. Feels ant-like, no?

Tracing man's steps towards advancement down the ages, one can observe that for each new comfort, or discovery that he brought about, a set of problems cropped up, concomitantly. It is through mistakes though, that we learn. Could we say for sure that man is definitely at a better stature now, than he was when he beastly, and lacked a rational approach? Yes, we're more aware, of things around, and within. Man has ventured into space, too. Landed on the moon. Is it a natural thing to have had happened, then? that there are umpteen pressing issues of global or national  concern, today, all that have come up and aggravated to an uncontrollable extent, in the process of man's pursuit to living a life of perfection? What with the world having seen World Wars, and lived through pandemics, catastrophes then and now, on this spot and that. Or could things have been better?

To Give It a Vent, Or Let It Pent.

True, circumstances shape us, or maybe just influence us. Many of us do turn out to be stern despisers of the institutions we've been made to believe in and worship from childhood. Others become ardent upholders of it, after internalising everything that's been drilled into their minds. So, different people react and respond to, and most of that 'response', we know, is not decided by us, or let's say, the conscious us.

Talking of people, let me just say, most of us crave to be acknowledged in more ways possible each day, gives us a kick. It always feels great to be paid a compliment to when you're amongst a lot many people, especially when some of them are people who don't really know you. In front of some, however, you don't stand expectantly with your tongue wagging. There, it's your turn to please them, in the sense that you can expect to laugh at and be laughed at by your friends. You can [casually] slap them if they're annoying you for a long time, you can tell them to shut up when they go on blabbering about something you weren't interested in listening to, right from the start. You can't try that with parents, right? You wouldn't even want to. Yes, no denying we all have those spurts of boiling anger brimming over when parents just say something to us and expect us to just gulp it down and dissolve it in our system, when we know it's actually causing a ruckus within. Then too, more than pelting a stone at them, you want to be able to argue with them, point for point, in a way that they saw you as thinking, [not perfect] people. If you were wrong after all, you could have it explained by them step by step, you think you deserved that much, right? And if they turned out to be wrong, they would [should] simply be glad they were wise enough to go for a discussion on something they had been sure of. But at times, they just know, that they know best. I wish they underwent such moments of epiphany when they were pathetically wrong, too. This ain't about the rebelling against parents crap at all.

Another category of people is of those who, you realise you can't respect, ever, but have to deal with however, because they are a part of your life. Faces you have to see everyday, or hear often about, though you're least interested in hearing of anything to do with them. Nor can you just go up to those people, and say with a wide smile across your face and tell them that they're one of the most pathetic, sick, dumb, fake, insensitive, indifferent persons you've come across, and that you're shutting them out of your life for good. Sad, that the people we're most sure about in life about, are often the ones we spend ages being able to do what we wish to about/with them, because of- again, circumstances, maybe, or our imaginary fears may have much to do with it, or imaginary problems, these imaginary things hold us back from manifesting something even better into the real, situations of our lives. But many a time, not always, those situations are such that you see no choice but to sit back and wait, and hope that someday you'll be able to fix this, or alter that.

Of people, some are as beautiful as the evenings of a splendid winter evening- chilly, yet comforting, in the warmth of fire- just like the most boring of occasions turn into the most cherishable
memories, with friends around. Time flies when you are with them. Each second spent with them is like drenching your soul with watery memories, so they just seep in, before you see them again, before the well of memories starts drying up again. And those Some, whom you can't bear, but have to put up with, like I mentioned above. And they take great pleasure in the fact that you can't rid yourselves of them, or that you can't say a word, when they are busy uttering away crap that you wouldn't normally take, from anyone. Sometimes, they Say things to you. Sometimes, things happen. And there was no question of you ever uttering a voice against that. And all you can do each time is, just re-live or accidently remember that moment when you felt you were treated miserably, knowing you didn't deserve it, [let's not bring in Karma here, Please.] and feel angry again, sick to the pit of your stomach, cry, at best, curse that person, and then what? Forget it, knowing you can't do anything about it? That sucks, right? That feeling of helplessness- I wonder if there's a word to be able to accurately describe it. And that bitterness remains, the memory of that experience remains, much as you would like to forget about it, knowing that you can't forget it forever either, because you know you've been wronged, and that will bubble forth, somehow.

Many of them, conveniently forget, what hopes you had pinned on them, what happy expectations you had from them, much as each persons deserves to expect from any fellow being- and mutilate them, because they were indifferent to those expectations, and to you in the first place, probably. You were probably no better than a rag doll- to be adored and decked up with newly stitched clothes- when you were lucky they were you know, in a good mood. And when they weren't in just a good mood, or had done something sick themselves, or were simply irritated- they would vent it out on you; not caring to stop and think if we'd ever be able to vent it, let it out, some way, someday? What if we never got that chance, to erase that bit of memory? What if we ourselves turned into one of those people we had despised? Or just be a victim of having that lived through that experience? Sometimes, it doesn't feel all that glorious, surviving all that and then living an entire lifetime. It is, maybe tougher. Seeing manifestations of happenings years old around you, in you, yet not able to control it? Maybe someone you had deeply loved and trusted betrayed it, or said something that did more than just hurt you. You realised in that instant that someone can bring your so called 'reality' crashing down, a reality you had cherished. And maybe you stop expecting anything from anyone, turned bitter and distant to anyone who tried to come close, turned cynical- could you be blamed?

Sometimes, more often than not, people we have great expectations from, disappoint us. Disappointment would be an understatement. And then, all our lives, we have to live with the fact that it did happen. Sometimes, it affects us to so great an extent that in moments when we're alone, and are following a chain of thoughts, we discover ourselves pondering over or considering something that seems at once alien to  ourselves, and yet a natural consequence of our own thoughts. But what triggered those thoughts? is hard to tell. If you want to kill someone off today, maybe you don't have to think about what people would think if they were privy to your thoughts, maybe you should just think over what caused it, and be calm in your own mind.  At times, things just happen, you couldn't have done much to forestall it. All I can think of saying is, maybe next time, you'll be better prepared. Maybe you won't. Some things you can take care of, make sure you do.
